Do government holiday announcements apply to Jordan’s private sector?
The Ministry of Labor confirmed that government announcements regarding official holidays and religious festivities apply to private sector institutions.
The Ministry clarified that, based on decisions from the Special Bureau for the Interpretation of Laws, any announcement determining official holidays and religious festive days includes the private sector.
The Ministry stated that Article 59 of the Labor Law outlines the mechanism for employing workers on their weekly rest days, religious holidays, or official holidays. It stipulates that if a worker is employed during these holidays, they are entitled to additional pay not less than 150% of their regular wage.
The Ministry has communicated with all relevant entities regarding this matter, including the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Supply, the Ministry of Investment, the Jordan Chamber of Industry, the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions, and the General Union of Jordanian Farmers.
