Ministry confirms adequate, secure stock of wheat and barley

The Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supply has announced that there is an ample and safe strategic reserve of wheat and barley, which will sustain local consumption for each commodity for a period of 12 months.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency (Petra), the ministry spokesperson, Yanal Baramawy, stated that this stock will shield the Kingdom from any near-term consequences of Russia’s withdrawal from the grain deal.

Moreover, the spokesperson cautioned that if the crisis prolongs, it will have adverse effects on global markets and grain supplies, particularly wheat, leading to potential price surges and impacting importing nations.

Baramawy also clarified that the Kingdom sources wheat and barley from multiple origins and that the ministry has devised a strategy to expand the country’s storage capacity for these commodities by approximately 2.5 million metric tons by the end of the current year, by establishing more containers.

Additionally, he indicated that the ministry regularly issues tenders to acquire more quantities of wheat and barley to maintain elevated stock levels, disclosing that Jordan’s monthly wheat consumption stands at 90,000 tons.
