Spain backs actor Javier Bardem, other performing artists supporting Palestine
- Spain says it supports artists facing backlash over pro-Palestine positions.
- Culture minister condemns alleged blacklisting and censorship targeting actors and public figures.
Spain’s culture minister Ernest Urtasun says the Spanish government stands with artists who have faced criticism, censorship, or professional backlash because of their support for Palestine and opposition to the war in Gaza.
Speaking after the government’s weekly meeting in Madrid, Urtasun voiced support for actor Javier Bardem and other public figures reportedly targeted over their political views.
The minister referred to reports that Bardem had been placed on a so-called “Hollywood blacklist” because of his outspoken criticism of actions in Gaza.
He also mentioned actors Susan Sarandon and Mark Ruffalo among those who have allegedly faced pressure or attacks linked to their support for Palestine.
Urtasun said Spain rejects all forms of censorship or targeting against artists for expressing political opinions, stressing that freedom of expression must be protected.
He also expressed solidarity with actor Sergi López, who reportedly faced criticism after signing a protest letter opposing support for ‘Israel’ within some cultural and media institutions.
During an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month, Bardem called for exposing those responsible for creating alleged blacklists against supporters of Palestine in the entertainment industry.
The comments come amid ongoing global debate over freedom of expression, artistic activism, and public positions on the war in Gaza.
