Rashida Tlaib secures re-election in Michigan’s 12th Congressional District
- Tlaib held off Republican nominee James D. Hooper, alongside third-party contenders Brenda K. Sanders, Gary Walkowicz, and Marc Joseph Sosnowski
- The 12th District encompasses parts of Wayne and Oakland counties, including Dearborn, parts of Detroit, and Southfield, remaining one of Michigan’s strongest Democratic bases
Democratic US Rep. Rashida Tlaib has secured re-election in Michigan’s 12th Congressional District, turning back a multi-candidate field to retain her seat in the US House of Representatives.
Decision desks and news networks called the race for Tlaib over Republican challenger James D. Hooper, as well as minor-party contenders representing the Green Party, Working Class Party, and US Taxpayers Party.
First elected in 2018 as one of the first two Muslim women to enter Congress alongside Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar, Tlaib represents a district anchored in Wayne and Oakland counties that includes Detroit suburbs such as Dearborn, home to one of the largest Arab-American populations in the country.
Throughout her campaign, Tlaib leaned on local economic advocacy, environmental protection in industrial corridors, expanded healthcare, and union rights. She also has served as one of Capitol Hill’s most prominent critics of US policy in the Middle East.
As the sole Palestinian-American voice in Congress, Tlaib has pushed to condition or halt US military financing and weapons transfers to ‘Israel’, stating that federal aid implicates Washington in civilian casualties and international law violations in Gaza and the West Bank.
Following the outbreak of war on Gaza, she was an early proponent of an immediate ceasefire and sponsored resolutions urging international accountability, positions that brought intense scrutiny from opponents and led to a formal House censure in late 2023.
Her Republican challenger, Hooper, centered his campaign on border security, economic relief, and regulatory rollback, aiming to break the Democratic hold on the district. Also appearing on the ballot were Green Party nominee Brenda K. Sanders, Gary Walkowicz of the Working Class Party, and Marc Joseph Sosnowski of the US Taxpayers Party.
With the contest decided, Tlaib will return to Washington to serve another two-year term, joining an incoming House Democratic majority preparing to take over chamber committees and legislative priorities in the new Congress.
