Twenty one cases of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) have been recorded in the Kingdom since the beginning of this year, a health official announced Wednesday.

Assistant Secretary-General for Primary Health Care at the Ministry of Health, Ghazi Sharkas, told the Jordan News Agency (Petra) that in conjunction with the world’s celebration of the World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1 of each year, the total number of (AIDS) cases registered in Jordan since 1986 until the end of 2019 amounted to 463 cases, in addition to 21 new cases recorded since the beginning of 2020.

Sharkas said that the Ministry of Health pays great attention to this disease that affects the human immune system and is caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and is conducting close follow-up on patients.

He pointed out that there is a voluntary counseling and tests center affiliated to the Communicable Diseases Directorate that provides consultations to patients and provides them with medicine for free.

He noted that AIDS patients constitute high risk groups vulnerable to the coronavirus and its complications, calling on patients to fully adhere to prevention methods, use masks, frequent sterilization, and follow up on taking medicine doses in regular basis.
