France is preparing to enforce a ban on the Muslim abaya in state schools, as revealed by the country’s education minister ahead of the approaching school term.
French Education Minister Gabriel Attal announced in an interview Sunday that he intends to prohibit Muslim schoolgirls from wearing the abaya while in classrooms.
Attal said in an interview with TV channel TF1: “I have decided that the abaya could no longer be worn in schools.”
He mentioned his intention to provide “clear guidelines on a national level” to school administrators as they prepare for the nationwide return to classes starting from September 4, as reported by Le Monde.
Attal was appointed as the education minister by French President Emmanuel Macron just last month.
