Yael Lambert officially approved as new US Ambassador to Jordan

The US Senate Saturday decided to approve the appointment of Yael Lambert as the new US ambassador to Jordan, replacing the current ambassador, Henry Wooster.

The move came shortly after the US State Department expressed its concerns regarding the draft cybercrime law in Jordan, highlighting its potential negative impact on the local information technology sector, as well as the country’s economic and political reform efforts.

In the first official US response to the bill, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State Vedant Patel stated that the proposed law could restrict freedom of expression both online and offline, leading to a reduction in available civic space within the kingdom.

The United States holds the position of the leading donor country to Jordan.

Interestingly, this statement from the US State Department was issued just hours after the legal committee approved the draft cybercrime law with minor amendments, including reductions in fines in certain provisions.

The draft law is now slated for discussion in the House of Representatives Thursday.
