President Abbas says Palestine counts on the supportive Turkish position

President Mahmoud Abbas said today that Palestine and its people count much on the Turkish position, which has always stood by Palestinian rights.

President Abbas made the remarks during a joint conference with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan after their meeting today in the Turkish capital, Ankara.

President Abbas appreciated Turkey’s firm positions in support of the rights of the Palestinian people and their relentless pursuit of freedom and independence.

He once again congratulated President Erdogan on his victory in the recent presidential elections, and the success of his recent tour in the Arab Gulf states, praising the position that Turkey has reached at the regional and international levels.

“Today we are facing an extreme right-wing Israeli government that seeks with all its might to destroy what remains of the foundations of the political process, through deliberate and planned racist and colonial practices, as well as its evasion of implementing all of its obligations, the latest of which are those of Aqaba and Sharm el-Sheikh,” President Abbas said.

He added efforts are underway to achieve the unity of the Palestinian land and people, stressing that the leadership invited the heads of the Palestinian factions to an urgent meeting at the end of this month in the Egyptian capital Cairo in order to restore national unity and develop a national program to face the challenges facing the Palestinian people and land.

For his part, President Erdogan affirmed that Turkey will continue to support and make every effort to defend the Palestinian cause in the strongest possible way and to increase the security and well-being of the Palestinian people.

He stressed that the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital on the basis of United Nations standards is a necessity for peace and stability in the entire region.

Erdogan said that today’s meeting tackled developments in Palestine in detail, adding that he evaluated with President Abbas steps that could be taken to further develop relations between the two countries.

The Turkish President added that he emphasized during the meeting his country’s support for strengthening the capacity of Palestine and improving the situation of the Palestinian people.

He affirmed that the Palestinian cause has not received the attention it deserves on the agenda of the international community for a long time, stressing the importance of the participation of the international community, especially the United Nations, in this issue.

Erdogan said that Turkey continues its solidarity with the Palestinian people and its support for the Palestinian cause in the strongest possible way, stressing that they are closely monitoring the developments in Palestine and are deeply concerned about the increasing loss of life, destruction, illegal settlement expansion and settler violence.

President Erdogan stressed that defending the vision of the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region, adding that actions aimed at changing the current historical situation of the holy sites, especially Al-Aqsa Mosque, cannot be accepted.

He affirmed that Palestinian unity and reconciliation is one of the essential elements in this process, noting that Turkey is ready to provide all kinds of assistance in this field.

Erdogan pointed out that the Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Coordination (TIKA), the Turkish Red Crescent and Turkish non-governmental organizations continue to provide humanitarian and development aid to Palestine, adding that Turkey continues its contributions to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and attaches great importance to its activities as in previous years.
