Polar front to affect Jordan Tuesday

The Kingdom on Tuesday is forecast to come under the grip of a very cold air mass in front of a depression centered over northern Cyprus, pushing temperatures sharply down and bringing chilly, cloudy and rainy weather conditions, mainly in the northern and central regions, forecasters said

In its daily brief, the Jordan Meteorological Department (JMD) expected heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms and hail at times, causing flash floods in valleys and low-lying areas, including the Dead Sea

In the afternoon, rainfall will stretch to cover the southwestern part of the country, with a chance for light showers of snow mixed with rain over the southern high peaks of Al-Sharah mountain range, the JMD predicted, noting that winds will be westerly brisk with strong gust at times, exceeding 60 kilometers per hour in some areas and blowing dust in the Badia

The weather department also warned of flash floods, strong winds, slippery roads in areas experiencing rain, and of poor horizontal visibility in the Badia and the highlands due to dust and fog formation

As we head into Wednesday, the country will remain under the impact of the polar front. Therefore, freezing and cloudy conditions will persist with occasionally heavy rain accompanied by thunder and hail, while winds will be strong, gusty with speeds reaching 70km/h, and stirring dust, according to the JMD

Snow flurries are also expected to fall in the late night hours over the mountain peaks that are 1100 meters above sea level, the JMD further said

Temperatures in the capital Amman today will range between a high of 10 degrees Celsius and a low of 4C at night, while the port city of Aqaba will see a fair 20C, sliding to 12C at night
