Police officer, gunman killed in shooting near Emory University in Atlanta

A police officer and a gunman were killed Friday in a shooting near the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and adjacent Emory University campus in Atlanta.

According to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, the suspect opened fire on windows of multiple buildings across the CDC’s sprawling campus, where thousands of scientists and staff work on disease research. Photos shared by employees showed bullet holes in glass façades.

Authorities identified the fallen officer as David Rose, 33, of the DeKalb County Police Department. He was shot while responding to the incident and later died at Emory University Hospital. Rose leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children, with a third child on the way.

A large multi-agency response was launched, including the Atlanta Police Department, DeKalb County Police, the FBI, and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Police secured the area and lifted lockdown orders after confirming the threat had ended.

The gunman was later found dead inside a CVS Pharmacy building at Emory Point, directly across from the CDC. It was not immediately clear whether he died from police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens said the motive for the attack remains under investigation. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp praised the bravery of officers who rushed toward danger.

Officials confirmed that 92 children were inside a CDC daycare facility during the shooting, all of whom were safely evacuated without injury. No CDC employees or civilians were hurt.

Some reports, citing acquaintances, suggested the suspect may have held personal grievances or conspiracy-driven beliefs related to vaccines, but authorities have not confirmed any such motive.

The investigation is ongoing, with law enforcement reviewing security footage, interviewing witnesses, and examining the suspect’s background.
