North Korea-US summit appears “possible at any time”: Seoul spy agency

A summit between the United States and North Korea appears “possible at any time” as signs have emerged of dialogue between them, a lawmaker citing South Korea’s spy agency said Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump has floated the idea of new meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but has mostly been met with silence in public from Pyongyang.

“Regarding the North Korea-US summit, there was an analysis that it should be viewed as possible at any time,” South Korean lawmaker Youn Kun-young told reporters, citing a briefing by the National Intelligence Service.

The lawmaker added that “while no facts regarding concrete contact between the two sides have been presented, there are signs of dialogue”.

Maritime exercises set to begin September 7 between the United States and allies South Korea and Japan have drawn an angry response from Pyongyang.

North Korea’s foreign ministry said Monday the drills “constitute a threat” to the nation and other countries in the region.
