Jordan is set to be impacted by a new weather system this coming Friday, classified as a Category-3 (medium to high-intensity) depression, according to meteorologists.
This storm marks the fourth major weather event of this intensity to strike the kingdom in just two weeks.
Osama Al-Tarifi, Director of Operations at “ArabiaWeather,” detailed the upcoming conditions during a broadcast on Roya.
He emphasized that while the midweek will offer temporary stability, a sharp atmospheric shift is imminent.
Rainfall, Wind, and Temperature Swings
The storm system is expected to deliver “excellent” amounts of rainfall across most regions of the kingdom, with total precipitation forecasted between 20 mm and 80 mm.
The depression will be accompanied by powerful wind gusts, particularly during Friday afternoon and evening. Peak gusts are expected to reach 80 km/h in most areas, while the Shara Mountains in the south could see wind speeds exceeding 100 km/h.
Temperatures are projected to plummet significantly. After reaching highs of 20°C (68°F) on Thursday, daytime temperatures will drop to around 11°C to 12°C (52°F) on Friday and Saturday.
Timeline: Stability Followed by a Potent Front
The weather event is divided into three distinct phases:
- Wednesday and Thursday (Pre-Depression): Temporary stability and rising temperatures, with highs near 20°C. Active easterly winds will persist, creating a “false spring” before the storm.
- Friday (Peak Activity): The depression will take hold gradually. Localized showers are expected in the north and center during the morning, transitioning into heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail across the eastern regions and highlands by afternoon.
- Friday Night and Saturday: Extremely cold, cloudy, and rainy conditions will prevail. Gale-force winds are expected over the Shara Mountains, accompanied by thick fog and a gradual tapering of showers.
Public Safety Recommendations
Authorities and meteorologists have issued several advisories for residents:
- Flood Risk: Exercise extreme caution near valleys and low-lying areas due to the high risk of flash floods.
- Wind Hazards: Secure outdoor items and lightweight structures against high winds.
- Health and Heating: Dress in heavy winter clothing and ensure the safe operation of heating devices as temperatures drop.
- Driving Safety: Maintain safe distances and drive with caution during heavy rain and periods of dense fog.
