Iran, Ukraine on agenda in Rubio-Lavrov phone call

  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov held a call discussing Iran, Ukraine and bilateral relations, according to the US State Department.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday, during which they discussed Iran, bilateral relations and the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to a brief statement from the US State Department.

The call was made at Lavrov’s request and comes less than a week after US President Donald Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the war in Ukraine, amid ongoing diplomatic efforts surrounding a proposed ceasefire.

The State Department said Iran was among the topics discussed, though Russia’s Foreign Ministry did not explicitly mention it in its own readout. Instead, Moscow said the two sides exchanged views on “the current situation in international affairs and Russian-American relations,” describing the conversation as “constructive and businesslike.”

The exchange follows recent high-level contacts between Washington and Moscow, including Trump’s statement that Putin had offered assistance regarding Iran-related issues, particularly in connection with enriched uranium, after their previous call.
