Egypt finishes second in group after 1-1 draw with Iran
Egypt finished as runners-up in their group after drawing 1-1 with Iran in Seattle on Friday, just hours after officially securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 for the first time in the nation’s four World Cup appearances.
Mahmoud Saber gave Egypt an early lead in the fifth minute before Iran missed a penalty through Mehdi Taremi. Ramin Rezaeian then equalized for Iran in the 14th minute.
The draw lifted Egypt to five points in Group G, level on points with Belgium but behind on goal difference after Belgium’s 5-1 victory over New Zealand.
