A drone strike struck Ali Al Salem airbase in Kuwait, a facility hosting American and Italian personnel, Italian military officials confirmed.
Chief of the Defence General Staff Luciano Portolano said the drone hit a shelter used by the Italian Task Force Air, destroying a remotely piloted aircraft stationed at the base. “At the time of the attack, all personnel were safe and uninjured,” the statement said.
Pattern of regional drone attacks
The incident comes a week after a drone strike on an Italian military site in Erbil, Iraq, where Italy also maintains forces. No injuries were reported in that attack either, though Italy withdrew approximately 300 troops following the Erbil strike.
Officials have not publicly attributed the Kuwait attack to any group, but the incident underscores growing risks to coalition forces in the region amid escalating drone activity.
Security and operational response
Italian and US authorities are reviewing security measures at Ali Al Salem to prevent future attacks. Analysts say drones targeting allied bases in the Gulf may signal a shift in tactics by regional adversaries, increasing the potential for indirect escalation.
