Beyond All the Technology… Face-to-Face Still Matters

After 25 years in the exhibitions and conferences industry, I hold a firm conviction: the rapid rise of social media and artificial intelligence has not eliminated the importance of physical presence at business events, it has made it more essential than ever.

Today, with the growing wave of digital fraud, fake companies, misleading trading platforms, and investment entities posing as something they are not, standing visibly in front of your audience matters more than ever. Exhibitions are no longer just a channel for promoting products or services, they are a platform for reinforcing credibility, strengthening market presence, and building trust with investors and clients.

As someone with a quarter-century of experience in this field, and a direct stake in it, I won’t pretend otherwise. But that doesn’t change the reality faced by those who have dealt with a fraudulent financial firm, or invested based on promises from an entity that exists nowhere beyond a screen.

Hybrid models have proven their value, but no virtual meeting, however advanced, can fully replace a handshake, eye contact, or the human connection built face-to-face.

And perhaps that is the greatest value of exhibitions and conferences: they don’t just create transactions, they create relationships. A meeting in an exhibition hall can become a partnership, and sometimes a lifelong friendship.

The more virtual the world becomes, the more valuable real human connection becomes.
How many successful partnerships or lasting friendships in your career started with a handshake at an exhibition or conference?
