Amman Citadel lights up with Sustainable Development Goals

Sunday evening, Amman’s Citadel was illuminated with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during a reception hosted by the United Nations (UN) Resident Coordinator in Jordan Sheri Ritsema-Anderson.

This event took place on the eve of the SDGs Summit in New York, which commences its proceedings Monday.

It is part of a global campaign to highlight the importance of implementing these goals and encourage everyone to work towards achieving them, especially as this year marks the halfway point towards the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

The Temple of Hercules at Citadel in the heart of Amman, now adorned with the SDGs, has become a canvas for messages and calls to action for these goals.

It reaffirms the UN’s support for Jordan in its efforts to achieve SDGs through partnerships and collective efforts.

The SDGs Summit, scheduled from the 18th to the 19th of this month, will be a crucial moment for world leaders and governments to present their commitments to urgently steer the world back on track to achieve these goals.

These are a set of agreed-upon actions adopted by the international community in 2015 to realize a just, inclusive, and sustainable future for all.

With only seven years left to achieve these goals, only 15 percent of them are on track for successful implementation. Leaders around the world are expected to provide national commitments to accelerate progress towards these goals, including setting standards for poverty reduction and inequality reduction by 2027.
