Recent figures from the Libyan Ministry of Interior reveal that the number of casualties from hurricane Daniel has surpassed 5,300 lives lost in the city of Derna.
The Libyan News Agency, citing an official within the Ministry of Interior, reported that the hurricane’s catastrophic impact in Derna has taken an overwhelming toll, with thousands of individuals still unaccounted for.
This dire situation prompted urgent calls for international intervention to bolster rescue efforts and provide aid to those affected by the unprecedented floods.
Tariq Ramadan, an official at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, emphasized that while final figures are yet to be confirmed, the scale of the tragedy is enormous and could potentially result in thousands of casualties. Additionally, the number of missing persons has risen to approximately 10,000 individuals.
Hurricane Daniel wreaked havoc in eastern Libya, causing widespread destruction in various regions, including the coastal town of Jabal Akhdar and Benghazi. The hurricane forced curfews and the closure of schools for several days.
The Libyan Presidential Council had previously declared Derna, Shahat, and Al-Bayda in Cyrenaica, located in the east of the country, as disaster areas due to the extensive flooding that engulfed these regions.
In response to the crisis, the Hashemite Charitable Organization initiated a humanitarian and relief mission to Libya, acting upon the directives of His Majesty King Abdullah II. The organization coordinated its efforts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs and the Jordanian Armed Forces/Air Force.
The aid plane carried essential relief supplies, including tents, blankets, mattresses, and food parcels. Coordination with relevant authorities in Libya was undertaken to ensure the efficient distribution of these supplies to the areas most severely impacted by the hurricane and flooding, with a focus on supporting deserving families affected by this devastating natural disaster.
