Morocco quake ‘not a surprise, but very infrequent’: expert

Professor of Planetary Geosciences at the Open University, David Rothery, spoke Saturday about the Morocco earthquake that killed over 2,000 people.

He explained that “there’s been nothing bigger than 6.0 within 500 kilometers of this since at least 1900,” making this disaster a “one in a century” occurrence.

He added that Earth’s movements due to the collision between Africa and Europe are still continuing and more is expected. Morocco “will have to think very seriously if it is worth investing in an earthquake-resilient building,” but, according to him, it is “a very difficult decision to make” considering the next one could only happen in a century.

Authorities declared three days of national mourning, but the Red Cross warned that it could take years to repair the damage.

The 6.8-magnitude quake struck late Friday in a mountainous area 72 kilometres (45 miles) southwest of the tourist city of Marrakesh, the US Geological Survey reported.

With strong tremors also felt in the coastal cities of Rabat, Casablanca and Essaouira, the quake caused widespread damage and sent terrified residents and tourists scrambling to safety in the middle of the night.
