Safadi, Mladenov confirm rejection of Israel’s annexation decision

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, and UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nikolay Mladenov, discussed efforts exerted to prevent Israel from implementing its decision to annex Palestinian territories and ward off the ensuing “unprecedented” danger on all efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in the region.
Held via videoconference, on Wednesday, the duo stressed rejection of the annexation, which constitutes a violation of international legitimacy and undermines the chances of achieving peace.
To achieve peace, they stressed the importance of adhering to international legitimacy decisions and adopting them as a basis for “effective” negotiations to resolve the conflict according to the two-state solution.

Discussing the future repercussions, Safadi said Israel’s implementation of the annexation decision will kill all opportunities for achieving comprehensive peace, which constitutes a threat to regional and international peace and security.

The annexation, he said, will perpetuate the occupation that the conflict will not end until its termination, stressing the importance of the negotiated solution that embodies the independent Palestinian state with occupied Jerusalem, as its capital, on the June 4, 1967 lines, in accordance with the two-state solution adopted by the international community as the only way to achieve peace.

In a bid to end Israel’s plans, Safadi urged the international community to move “quickly and effectively” to block annexation and revive the prospects for achieving a just peace, acceptable to all peoples, and adopted by all Arab countries as a strategic choice.

Continuing:”The whole region stands at a critical crossroads. Either a just peace whose way is the two-state solution, or a long and painful struggle will be the inevitable outcome of the annexation decision.”

On the long-term, he said Israel’s implementation of the annexation decision means choosing the conflict instead of peace, as Tel Aviv will be held to account for its dangerous repercussions on Jordanian-Israeli relations and on all efforts to achieve comprehensive peace.
