A statement issued by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that persecution of homosexuals in the context of the coronavirus has increased.

A statement was published on the occasion of the International Anti-Homophobia Day, which is celebrated on May 17.
“Among the many serious consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic is the increasing persecution of the LGBT community … already facing prejudice, assaults, and killings just for who they or those they love, many LGBTs are increasingly condemned as a result of the virus.”
The Secretary-General also referred to reports that the police are misusing COVID-19 directives, with the aim of harassing representatives of the LGBT community and related organizations.

The idea of establishing the International Day to Combat Homophobia was presented on May 17 by French author and researcher Louis-Georges Tien.
On this day, May 17, 1990, the World Health Assembly agreed to revise the International Classification of Diseases established by the World Health Organization (WHO), according to which sexual orientation is no longer considered a disease.
The International Day to Combat Homophobia has been officially celebrated since 2003.
